Lys & Tværs (Light Crossing) is a light sculpture commissioned by the city of Herning.
We were asked to design a light sculpture, which could accentuate the T-crossing of two pedestrian streets in the city centre.
Formally Lys & Tværs is inspired by traditional checkered pattern designs from the era of the local textile mills. The suspended sculpture is a 3D exploded version of a checkered cloth pattern.
Daylight creates a play of shifting highlights and shadows accross the aluminium beams. Around sunset a very slow light animation sets in, vertically facing the three street directions and horizontally shining down on the pavement.
Throughout the year Lys & Tværs changes its light animation content every month.
